Questions
What is the most useful kitesurf gadget?
For safety, a hook knife: cheap, small and the one thing you cannot improvise when a line wraps around something. For fun and progress, a session tracker that logs your jumps, speed and route without your phone on the water.
Do I really need a hook knife for kitesurfing?
Yes. Many harnesses have a pocket for one. A line around a limb, a buoy or another rider’s gear is rare, but then it must be cut within seconds. Check the blade now and then: salt water dulls and rusts it.
Should I wear a helmet when kitesurfing?
It is a good idea when learning to jump, riding a foil, kiting near piers or groynes, or going out in strong, gusty wind. Choose a low-profile watersports helmet; the Gath Gedi, for example, meets the EN 1385 standard.
Which gadget measures kite jump height?
Board-mounted sensors such as WOO, apps such as Surfr on a phone or watch, and body-worn sensors such as SANDIT Sensor all estimate jump height from motion data. Their numbers are not interchangeable, so compare your jumps on one device.
Can I track kitesurf sessions without my phone on the water?
Yes. A waterproof sensor such as SANDIT Sensor records on its own and syncs to the app over Bluetooth after the session, so your phone can stay dry in your bag on the beach.
