Works at the spot.

September 2026: the NKV reports sand nourishment. A kiter hit a pipe; the one in the launch area is now partly buried.

  • Launch and land only in the designated zone.
  • Keep 100 metres from the works, on the beach and the water.
  • Do not jump over pipes or the pier, or use obstacles as features.

Otherwise, the NKV says, Workum may close during the works. Check the NKV spot page before you go.

Which wind works?

A sandbar breaks the waves. Beyond it the water gets deep right away, with short, steep chop in strong wind.

  • The spot rules are written for kiters. Check on site where wingers go out.

Questions

Can you kitesurf in Workum all year?

Yes. According to the NKV, Workum is open to kiters all year, inside the yellow buoys of the kite zone. From 1 June to 1 September kite schools need permission from the municipality, and no more than 30 lesson kites may be in the air.

Is Workum good for beginners?

Yes. The water stays shallow and flat for a long way out, so you can stand while you practise. It is also one of the busiest spots in the Netherlands and the beach has limited room. Learn with a certified school first.

Can you wingfoil in Workum?

Yes, wingfoil lessons are given in Workum too. Only foil beyond the sandbar, where the water gets deep right away; in the shallow part your foil will hit the bottom. Stay out of the swimming zone and give kiters and students room.

What should I know about the works at Workum?

In September 2026 the NKV reported sand nourishment works after a kiter hit a pipe. Launch and land only in the kite zone, keep 100 metres from the works and do not jump over pipes or the pier. Check the NKV spot page for updates.
