Wind that works

SW · W · NW · N

Pins based on OpenStreetMap, checked October 2026. Signs and zones on the beach always come first.

North Sea side: yes. Grevelingen side: no.

The lake side has no kite zone, and outside designated water the Dutch inland navigation rules (BPR, art. 9.05) ban kiting.

Rules and safety.

  • Kite zone only: on the Goeree-Overflakkee side, between beach access points (strandopgang) 7 and 9. Follow the signs.
  • Not in the swimming zone with yellow buoys at pavilion De Brouw.
  • Beach access Brouwersdam 1 (Schouwen-Duiveland): kite, wind and wave surfing banned all year.
  • Kitefoilers launch only in their own zone, where it is deep right away. No twin-tips there.
  • Stay well away from the sluice: strong eddies at its entrance.
  • Grevelingen side: no kiting. On the lake, go to the Grevelingendam; Noord is open 15 March to 1 November only.
  • East in the wind: do not ride. You would drift out to sea.
  • Busy? Launch and land with room, secure your kite, let riders heading out go before riders coming in, and give swimmers and walkers space.
  • Riding independently? Only once you can water start, go upwind and work your quick release and leash blind. Ideally not alone.

Always check local rules and the beach signs before you go. Zones change.

Questions

Can you kitesurf on the Grevelingen side of the Brouwersdam?

No. There is no designated kite zone on the inland side of the dam, and the Dutch inland navigation rules (BPR) ban kiting on inland water outside designated areas. At the Brouwersdam you kite on the North Sea side, in the signposted zone.

What is the best wind direction for the Brouwersdam?

The NKV lists north, northwest, west and southwest as safe directions. The North Sea side faces northwest, so those blow onshore or along the beach. Any wind with east in it is offshore: stay on the beach.

Is the Brouwersdam good for beginners?

Yes. The NKV rates it as suitable from beginner level: hundreds of metres of shallow, flat water and a big sandy beach to launch and land. Learn with a certified kite school before you ride on your own.

Where can kitefoilers launch at the Brouwersdam?

Only in the dedicated kitefoil launch zone set up by the NKV. The water is deep right away there, and it is the only place on the Brouwersdam to start on a foil. Twin-tips do not launch or ride in that zone.
